Managing a Post GFC Workforce

Managing a Post GFC Workforce.

Hey…the GFC is over?
Isn’t it?
Well, not really, even though Australia has fared much better than the rest of the world.

What has happened right across Australia however, is that businesses and organizations both private and public have got leaner.

There’s simply less fat.

Now, there’s less reserve capacity in our systems. We are all doing ‘more with less’. That means less time, fewer resources and certainly fewer people.

The big challenge and risk here is that organizations and companies are requiring their people to be more productive, and in many cases that means by working harder and longer. A post GFC workforce is in many ways a very different to that of even a decade ago.

Unfortunately, the human body, or machine, is not like a mechanical machine where hours at work, productivity and safety can be simply expanded together.

If we work a machine for 20 hours, we get 20 hours productivity and essentially, if we work it for 100 hours we continue to get 100 hours productivity.

But once we begin working the human machine longer and harder, all sorts of social and physiological issues come to the fore. We succumb to fatigue. And a critical point is that fatigue doesn’t discriminate, it affects everybody.

Multiple research outcomes tell us that as we stretch out our human hours of wakefulness, irrespective of whether we are working or not, our performance begins to be impaired. This means that our ability to think, to reason, our motor skills and attitudinal performance begins to suffer.

So, as we ramp up the hours health risks increase, social costs start to rise, the incidence of errors, incidents and accidents begins to rise.
